09/2012 - CAST Terminal Simulation Study for Copenhagen Airport completed

Airport Research Center GmbH has completed a simulation study of the check-in area at Copenhagen Airport.

Copenhagen Airport is planning modifications to the international check-in area within the next years. These modifications aim to improve the passenger flow for passengers arriving by train and all passengers leaving the baggage reclaim area. Furthermore the area connecting Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 shall be expanded to offer more flow space and some more check-in capacity using automated bag drop machines.

Airport Reserach Center set up a detailed CAST Terminal Model and simulated different layout alternatives in combination with different check-in allocation scenarios.

Possible bottlenecks as well as possible ‘dead areas’ were identified and the drawbacks and advantages of the different solutions could be shown to find the most suitable and future proof one. Comparing the results of the scenario simulations with the results from the baseline simulation the effect of the terminal modification could be described. This description was a significant contributor to the decision on final layout and timing of the individual elements.

01/2011 - "Low Cost High Quality Terminal"

The new terminal for the existing Charkov International Airport, which was opened for operations in November 2010, was developed from an Airport Research Center’s modular pallet capable to offer clients a cost efficient Low Cost High Quality Terminal.

The terminal was designed to cope with a passenger peak volume of 600 Pax/h, consisting of 400 international and 200 domestic passengers. A second terminal, which shall be build at a later stage, will be added through a similar construction, accommodating a further combined passenger volume peak of up to 1200 Pax/h, consisting of 800 international and 400 domestic passengers.

Modular terminal development is not only attractive for small to medium size airports due to its cost efficient terminal, but also due to the effortless understanding of the modular assembly of all relevant terminal components, which constantly presents the client with an up-to-date investment costs estimate for a specific terminal. Here the client may vary between modules up to the point of applying for a construction permit.

Airport Research Center’s modular pallet is not only used to optimise the functional aspects and planning phases of any proposed terminal, but offers a terminal that is sustainable in its design and in its functional layout. The client is able to choose a terminal module or combination of modules to create a Low Cost High Quality Terminal whilst taking into consideration all relevant design and financial issues which might be important.

Construction of the new terminal in Charkov was accomplish whilst employing local companies and products, and realised in close conjunction with qualified local engineers and architects. Optimising the terminal layout throughout all design phases via Airport Research Center’s CAST-Terminal simulation software, which was applied to validate any functional layouts of the terminal, offering the city of Charkov a Low Cost High Quality Terminal.
