Scope of the application

tpo_01TPO is applied by our consulting engineers, in combination with our consulting services, to identify the ideal positions for any air traffic and apron control tower on an airfield. Here for, consideration to buildings and obstacles, which may obstruct controller sight, is taken into account.  

TPO is able to identify the precise locations from where crucial elements can be seen, by calculating the view point of the airside movement area from a variety of points and elevations by simulating the perspective view of the controller observing airport traffic. TPO considers all possible positions within a defined planning area. It can simulate views perspective from a single or multiple control tower locations. Furthermore, it can determine the number of towers necessary for optimum safety while identifying the most effective combination of tower locations.  

tpo_03TPO enhances both the speed and quality of the planning process. In the initial planning stage, TPO can also include planned buildings into the site analysis. Therefore, TPO helps identify the impacts buildings have on the towers operational environment. TPO is a reliable alternative to the expensive and often ineffective method of aerial location scouting. TPO saves costly and time-consuming on-site studies. Needing only the following data:

  • 3D model of the airport, relief and building
  • general tower design
  • important elements of the airside movement area

With this information, we can then determine the precise location on which to construct a tower in order to obtain the best possible view.
